Marian Czapla

Ukrzyżowanie dla Bogdana, 2008, akryl na płótnie
Crucifixion for Bogdan, 2008, acrylic on canvas

Marian Czapla, a painter of an older generation who lives and works in Warsaw, is another representative of this unusual “gay ars christiana”. Since the 1970s, Czapla has been creating the series Ecce homo and Ukrzyżowanie (Crucifixion), based on an expressionistic figure of a towing nude man whose muscular body is represented by bulky shapes of the buttocks and the arms. The genitals emerge from a dark crotch. The artist paints nude models; his saints are tough and athletic worker types. Czapla’s Christ is often naked, his Pieta is a composition of two nude men embracing each other.
